Can You Study at a Film Making School in Johor Instead of KL?

Can You Study at a Film Making School in Johor Instead of KL?

Yes. You do not have to move to Kuala Lumpur to train in film. A film making school in Johor teaches the same core skills: camera, lighting, editing and visual effects. The real question is which city suits your life and the work you want.

That question changed a little on 29 September 2026. The government held its KL20@Johor event at Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Iskandar Puteri. The Economy Minister announced film and TV co-productions with studios from Australia and South Korea, worth about RM92 million over two years (The Star, 29 September 2026). He also named the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone as a hub for content and virtual production.

Where film work in Malaysia happens today

Most Malaysian film, TV and advertising production has been in the Klang Valley. Broadcasters, big agencies and many production houses are based there. This is why so many students assume they must study in KL.

Johor is trying to change that. The state moved its film unit to Invest Johor, and a state exco said he hopes more filmmakers will pick Johor over the Klang Valley (The Star, 29 September 2026). A major US production is also in talks to shoot there. We explain what that could mean in our article on the proposed US film shoot in Johor.

So KL still has more production work today. Johor has a studio complex, a push from the state and Singapore next door.

Johor and KL side by side

What to compare Studying in Johor Studying in KL
Production work nearby Growing, with a studio complex in Iskandar Puteri The largest share of Malaysian production
Living near family Easier if you are from the south Easier if you are from the Klang Valley
Daily travel Shorter distances outside JB city traffic Longer commutes are common
Singapore Across the Causeway A flight or a long drive away
Industry events Fewer, but growing Many more talks, festivals and screenings

No table can decide for you. It shows which trade-offs matter most in your case.

What a film making school teaches in any city

The skills you learn do not depend on the postcode. Editing software, camera settings and lighting setups are the same in Skudai and in Petaling Jaya. What changes the quality of your training is the school, not the state.

Check these things at any film making school, in any city:

  1. Hands-on time. How many hours will you spend holding a camera or editing, not listening to a lecture?
  2. Equipment you can use. Can students book cameras, lights and editing suites, or only watch a demo?
  3. Real projects. Will you work on projects that feel like client work, with a brief and a deadline?
  4. What you receive at the end. Ask which certificate you get, who issues it, and what it lets you do next.

If you want a longer checklist, read how to compare cinematography courses in Malaysia before you pay.

The costs to count beyond the fees

Course fees are only part of the bill. Before you compare two cities, count the costs around the course as well.

Rent is the first one. If you move away from home, you pay for a room every month of the course. If the school is near your family, that cost may be zero.

Transport is the second. Film students carry bags, tripods and hard drives. A long bus or train ride with gear every day is tiring, and a car adds petrol, tolls and parking.

Food and daily spending come next. These add up over a year, and they are different in each city.

Equipment is the last. Some students buy a laptop that can edit video, or a basic camera for practice. Others rely on school equipment and buy later. Ask the school what you will really need before you spend.

Add these together for each option. A course with lower fees in a city far from home can end up costing more than a closer one.

How students find their first jobs

Most film students do not get their first job from a job advert. They get it from someone who saw their work or worked with them.

That is why class projects matter so much. A project with a real brief and a real deadline gives you something to show. Your classmates also become your first network, because they will be the people hiring freelancers in a few years.

Wherever you study, start collecting three things early: a short showreel, the names of people you worked with, and one or two small paid jobs. Local shops, events and small businesses often need simple videos. These first jobs teach you how to deal with clients, and they are easier to find in your home town.

When Johor makes more sense

Johor suits some students very well.

If your family lives in Johor, staying home can make a full-time course possible. You avoid rent in a new city and keep your support around you. This matters most for younger students. See what parents should check before starting film making school at 16.

If you already work in Johor, a part-time course nearby is far easier than weekend trips to KL. Evening or weekend classes only work when the travel is short.

If you are interested in Singapore work, Johor Bahru is the closest you can get while studying in Malaysia. Singapore has its own production and advertising work. You would need the right permits to work there, so check the rules before you plan around it.

When KL makes more sense

KL suits other students better.

If you want to go to many industry events, KL has more of them. Screenings, festivals and networking nights happen almost every week.

If you already have contacts at a KL production house, studying nearby lets you keep in touch and maybe help on their shoots.

If you want to work in broadcast television, most stations are in the Klang Valley.

None of these rule Johor out. Many people train in one city and work in another.

How to decide in one visit

The best way to choose is to see the school in person. Ask to watch a class or join a demo. Look at the equipment students actually use, not the gear in the brochure photos.

Bring three questions with you. How much of the week is practical? What do students make before they finish? And what do graduates leave with?

Write the answers down on the day. A Skudai campus that runs demo classes is one place to start the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a film school in Johor?

Yes. There are film and video training centres in Johor, including one in Skudai that teaches camera work, editing and visual effects. Visit before you enrol so you can see the equipment and classes yourself.

Is it better to study film in KL or Johor?

It depends on where you live and what work you want. KL has more production work today, while Johor has a studio complex, state support for filming and Singapore nearby. The quality of the school matters more than the city.

Can I work in the film industry if I study in Johor?

Yes. Film skills are the same everywhere, and crews travel for work. Johor is also trying to attract more productions, including a major US shoot that was in talks in September 2026.

What is Iskandar Malaysia Studios?

It is a film and TV studio complex in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. It has film stages, TV studios and post-production rooms. It hosted the KL20@Johor event on 29 September 2026.

Can I visit a film school before I enrol?

Most schools let you visit or join a demo class if you ask. It is the best way to see how much hands-on time students really get. Book the visit before you pay any fees.

Do I need my own camera to study film in Johor?

Not always. Many schools let students use school cameras and editing computers. Ask what equipment you can book and for how long before you buy anything.
